The Given Hopes, Dreams and Wishes.
What would you call yourself? And how would you describe yourself? Answer those two questions with simply your own definition words of what you believe in.
A name is given to a baby with yet understanding of the world. Parents named their baby with hope and dream. Baby born innocently with the brain eagerly wanting to be sculptured. Every parents placed their hopes and dreams for their baby into a name. After the name is given, then on is the parents obligation to sculpture, instruct, show and teach their child into the person they had hope and wish. Therefore as adults who found their names’ meaning to be almost precise, that means the parents had done their job successfully.
Recently
#themeaningofmyname has been popular among instagrammers. I assume people have
been curious about the truth, whether their names truly defined themselves or
not. Name majority define a person precisely, however there are still people
with names contrarily defining them. Once instagrammers discover their names’ meaning
are precisely them, there is this pleased and satisfied feeling. However, how can
the name’s definition precisely describe a person, when the name is given at
birth and far from our own intention and request?

I was given the
name “Selma,” which according to Google it was a worldly popular name in the
year of 1916 to 1934. Nowadays, the names similar as “Selma” are commonly just
Selena, Salma, Thelma and Seline. I assume in this era, people are rarely named
Selma. I discovered few meanings of my name, which I believe 80% describe
myself. I guess my parents successfully done their job, hahaha.
Selma is a restless person with full of
creativity for completion, but doesn’t believe is satisfaction. My mother never
trusts housemaid, therefore I am her second helper when it comes to housework.
Being her second helper I discovered and invented many recipe, from one recipe
leads to another, now being creative in the kitchen is my hobby. My mother
always says “Never be just a regular person, but be extraordinary for others.”
A simple example, school assignment will be done to the perfection not to the
minimum requirements. I learned from my mother, to put my maximum potential not
my minimum. Though the result may not be as expected, I am able to learn from my
absence. Therefore I am always seeking to improve, because I never see things
through satisfaction. I believe satisfaction leads to snobbery and
unproductiveness. Selma is also a person who has the power for persuading and
influencing the community. My mother is an ex-flight attendant, meeting, communicating
and assisting new people was her life. Before becoming a flight attendant, she
dreamed to be a reporter. Therefore all can be concluded it as genes, haha. Before
discovering my mother’s dream of reporter, I already had that as my dream even
though it changed overtime. My mother taught me to be communicative and
beneficial to others. I love the attention when people listen to you upfront
delivering and presenting. The more I learned from my mother the more I wanted
to be a teacher, I love sharing my knowledge to the children. When I teach, I
felt happy because of how I can be beneficial to others. Being needed and asked
for by the children became my happiness and pleasure.Last, the name Selma
has the spirit of independency, therefore she or he doesn’t believe in close
relationship. Both of my parents used to full-time workers, which involve
travelling. Therefore I have grown into an person who finishes duties
independently. I have also faced heartbroken and disappointment from kind of
causes. Though everybody experiences these problems, they found their own ways
to avoid. Mine was to be careful getting people deeply into “ties that binds,”
because you’ll get hurt easily when those people abandon you. Keep in mind
that, people who are sincere with you are those who accepted the real you and
stay during sickness and health (as if you are marrying hahaha.)
Despite all the
precise definition of my name, there are also some that are not true. The name
Selma is believes to be versatile, she or he is musical, artistic, sportive and
etc. There are things I am lack of, because I am told by parents that nobody is
perfect but to always give your fullest perfection. I love drawing and painting,
that can be considered as artistic. My golden age was always full with crafts
activity, my parents took me to many events urged to be creative. I am also
sporty, I have a mother used to be a swimmer and a father who thirst for karate
belt. Sports has always been shown to me since birth. Despite all that, I am
not musical. If you knew me well enough, you will regretting and rejecting my
singing, hahaha.
Before even finding
the truth meaning of the name Selma, my parents first decided the name Selma
came from a TV series in the year of 1993 to 1994 called “Time Trax.” My mother
watched that show during her pregnancy. “Time Trax” is a story of a police
detective who travels time to capture escaped fugitives. Detective Darien
Lambert is assisted by holographic form of a young woman name SELMA. SELMA
itself stand for Specified Encapsulated Memory Archive. My parents believe
SELMA’s intelligence saved many life and helpful to Detective Darien Lambert.
They both wanted and wished that one day I’ll use my intelligence to help
others and be useful just as SELMA. Therefore a baby named Selma was born in
December 13 1995. And from what my parents had wished for, since little I had
so many dreams but now I don’t have specific dream of what I want to be. Since
little I dreamed to be Miss Indonesia, Veteran Ian, Detective, Reporter and all
turn out to be just having desire to help a lot of people. Now I am an English
Teacher hehehe. Selma also means “God’s helmet,” my parents also wanted me to be
a protection to others, a person who others can rely on.

Overall, name is
our parents wishes and hopes. If we turn out to be the same person as the
name’s meaning, then the parents had succeeded. We should be grateful for
having amazing parents who brought and guided us into the person we are now,
because not all children accommodated by great parenting. A person’s characters
and behavior are sculptured by parenting and supported by society.
